This is why religious “authorities” are a sometimes insulting joke in 20/20 hindsight. Had an eminent statistician voiced the view that the credit crunch fell within the purview of the Central Limit Theorem of statistics, no-one would have given it a second thought. However, invoke god as the irate instigator on no discernible or viable basis and all ears just prick up.
