Everyone has a fear of something; mine is a fear of flying :o . Normally, I’m a calm and rational person. One a few occasions, where I’ve been put into a crisis situation, I’ve dealt with it very well - but not when it come to flying. My mind and my body become two separate entities; my mind tries to deal with it by reasoning, but my body goes into panic mode and no matter how much I try to rationalise the situation, my body refuses to listen. My heart rate goes up, my hands and feet sweat profusely, and I become a nervous wreck. I find that my fear is getting worse as I’m getting older.
About 2 years ago, I made an appointment to try hypnotherapy - the hypnotherapist failed to turn up for the appointment ( obviously she didn’t need my R500.00), so I can’t tell you if that works or not.
Tomorrow, I’m flying to Cape Town - apologies in advance to anyone else who maybe on the same flight - and I’ve already lost just over a kilo in the last week stressing about it. Does anyone have any suggestions about overcoming my fear without having to resort to medication?
Go skydiving. Much more scary than flying, so you stress about that. Mine is about blood. I actually fainted once when my wife talked about it. So now I donate blood. Can’t look at the pipes and things though.
I’m scared of stuff coming at me fast. Witty jokes or cricket balls for instance. I freeze up, and stare quite hypnotized at the enlarging sphere, and that’s mostly all I remember.
Actually now that I think about it, all surprises suck.
Some phobias are instinctive ( such as for spiders and snakes) and some are based on awareness and knowledge, which is a sign of intelligence.
When you scared of flying it’s because you know things can possibly go wrong! The more we get to know the greater the awareness becomes. That’s why ignorance is called bliss. We all should ideally get used to living a calculated life and acquire an appropriate attitude towards situations and objects which may trigger a feeling of fear. My fear is for any unnatural fast movements of which I am part.
Well, I managed to survive my flight there and back with the help of a marvelous natural remedy called wine, lots of it! ;D
Unfortunately, it happened to be around the same time as the Air France crash, so that hasn’t helped my phobia much.
When you scared of flying it's because you know things can possibly go wrong! The more we get to know the greater the awareness becomes. That's why ignorance is called bliss.
That's so true, that's why I avoid watching those air crash investigation doccies on tv.
Well done. I know the deal, sweaty palms etc. especially when going through clear turbulance! It goes back the discussion we had on relativity - when you are going through it, although it may only be for a few minutes, it seems like half the flight.
It’s funny how you think like that. Like the probability of the plane you are flying in crashing will decrease the less you watch those programs? I was listening to a podcast the other day where they interviewed a guy who had done a study on whether or not someone would wear a piece of clothing if they new that it belonged to a mass murderer? I guess it’s almost the same thing. Rationally, you know that it won’t make you become one if you wear it (Unless it is affected by ghosts or spirits) but most people said they would not. I will try and find out who it was.
There are a number of sites on the web that give probability figures. This one and many other say that the odd are between 1 in 1 million and 1 in 14 million that you will die in a plane crash. I think those are pretty good odds?
Popular Mechanics has this article, which I suppose would help increase those odds a little?
Just kidding about the ghosts and spirits thing - they don’t exist. Just seeing if you are awake!
Worms, I cant deal with worms. I flee screaming in horror and refuse to enter a 20m radius of the sighting of one. I’m not scared of them, but its the most gruesome, freak-out, gut-ugly, nauseating being on earth.
