Proof of God's existance

Thanks Brian. Sounds to me as if the Christians will pounce on just about anything in a debate with Dawkins (or philosophical errors in his books) to say, “Ha! We stumped Dawkins, therefore our proofs are valid.”

I had an argument with a woo on opposingviews concerning the failure of evolution to explain the development of batwings (the old Behe argument of irreducible complexity) and the fact that bat fossils are very scarce did not deter them, hence:

evolution fails to explain batwings
thus bats were created
thus God exists. (wtf!!)

Wow, that’s a pretty bad argument. Almost as bad as these ones:

Life has existed for millions of years on earth.
Evolution explains the variety of life on earth.
Therefore God does not exist.

Or this one:
Life on earth started millions of years ago.
Abiogenesis explains the origin of life.
Therefore God does not exist.

Or this one:
The big bang is the beginning of space-time
Multiverse theory explains why the constants are fine-tuned.
Therefore God does not exist

How about this one:
The universe has existed forever and will continue to exist forever.
Infinite big bangs and big crunches explain how it is possible.
Therefore God does not exist

I don’t know which one is the worst though…

Given the overwhelming evidence of your capacity to answer questions, I’ll leave that for you to decide.

I give up, all of them are pretty horrible.

What astounds me is that some Christians think we use evolution as a means to prove that God doesn’t exist. Actually that’s just the way they see it - not us. To me, evolution is merely a theory of how life developed on earth over the eons, it is the result of scientists looking at evidence and trying to find explanations. I personally do not think the purpose of evolution has ever been to “disprove God”. Oh well - that’s the way I see it, anyway.

I agree with you, Stevo. What most of the woos don’t understand is that I have nothing to prove (as opposed to them trying to convince me of the existence of god the whole time, without ANY kind of proof) I don’t pray to the gods of evolution because I “believe it to be true” and simply “have faith”, rather - the knowledge that I possess at present indicates evolution to be the most logical explanation for how we came to be here. god, again, has nothing to do with it… :-\

The more the woos kick and shout the higher their levels of uncertainty…I was in fact labeled by this guy that I see science as a religion and have faith in science (wtf!!)

It’s crazy out there. I think Christians see everything through their faith-filters. Whereas nonreligious people (well okay, I can’t speak for all of us … but IMO then) seldom think of God. The concept is impossible, if not decidedly weird, and we simply live our lives … finding fulfillment in who we are and what we do. Atheism is not something you “do” - it’s something you “don’t do.”

Then the woos come around with their God-theory and start whining that evolution is trying to prove the Bible is false? Well no, Sweety, the Bible does that all on its own, we’re just trying to figure out what all this fossil-evidence-stuff means.

Here’s another from the best xtians quotes:

  1. If the Bible were not true, logic would not be meaningful.
  2. Logic is meaningful.
  3. Therefore, the Bible is true.
