Great news. Bill Maher’s movie, Religulous, is set for release on Friday 05 December 2008 in Ster-Kinkor Cinemas.
Thanks for reminding me. ;D
Now I’m rather perplexed by the rating that the FSB gave to the film; 18 LBP. Language, Prejudice and Blasphemy. Blasphemy? I suppose that it is warranted, but has anyone ever seen this rating on any other film?
Any bets on how long it’s going to take before calls for banning / boycott start?
Good point. I think if you are wanting to see it - get in early!
Never seen the B rating either. Even The Exorcist doesn’t have a B rating :
Look it up at http://www.fpb.gov.za/home_page.asp
The inconsistency is mind-blowing. I didn’t know (until Brian Tristam Williams from Nu Metro Entertainment told me) that there is also a “D” rating for protrail of drug use in a film.
I feel like I’m repeating myself so if you’ve read this already, please bear with me double posting.
I find it odd that there is a rating for Drugs - I certainly haven’t seen a rating “D” on any film with scenes showing drug use, including the films Traffic, 51st State and Trainspotting. I hope that I’m not the only one confused by the inconsistency.
There is a scene in Pulp Fiction where Uma Thurman snorts a line of cocaine and says “I say God damn!”.
Lets see what fpb thinks about this?
FILM TITLE: PULP FICTIONInconsistency? That’s an understatement.
…
BLASPHEMY: NONE
DRUG ABUSE: NONE
BTW. If you are searching for “Trainspotting”, seems they made the same spelling mistake as me… it is under “Transpotting”. No drug use in that movie either :
The more letters added behind the title and the 18, the more people will want to see it! People want to be shocked.
We are all so desensitised by the movie industry that it takes more and more to truly shock us. For instance, we will find Alfred Hitchcock’s movies quite boring today, compared to the likes of Saw and Hostel. There used to be a law (needs confirmation) that required a male and female actor to have at least one foot on the floor when acting in a scene involving a bed. Removing a shoe was porn.
Churches and entire communities will talk about this movie for months! They will tell everyone how evil it is, and then slip into a movie theater in another suburb to see it. In this case, negative publicity will ensure its success. If they can manage to have it banned and unbanned, they’re made.
I will definitely go and see it and tell everyone how blasphemous it is and that they should not watch it!
Watch the trailer on the Ster Kinekor site:

Bill Maher is number 38 on Comedy Central’s 100 greatest stand-ups of all time. Go George Carlin! Number 2!
I’m watching the 17:15 show of Religulous at the Gateway today… cannot wait!
I also went to see the film (or a film with a similar sounding name :P) last night. I wrote a review here but I warn you that if you haven’t seen the film yet you might find some of the comments I make can spoil the documentary for you. Pop-over if you are not going to watch the film or if you think that spoilers are fun or if you have seen it already. For those of you who’ve seen it, I’d like to know what you thought.

I agree with many of the points you made, and also expected more, but we have to remember that Religulous is a comedy (as you also pointed out). Comparing it to the likes of The Root of All Evil is like comparing Meet the Spartans with 300.
A nice break from the same old arguments and counter arguments that seems to go nowhere since Ayn Rand’s days. As science and reason progresses, so does Christian apologetics.
Religion is ridiculous, and should be mocked. It deserves the same reaction as any other claims made by deluded nuts… ridicule, laughter and a possible trip to a psychiatric institution.
Whatever you do… DO NOT watch this documentary!
That’s a good point, I didn’t think of that. Perhaps the atheists and agnostics have started to sound like a broken record (mostly because there have been no good answers to the same challenges for the past umpteen years) and Maher has found a fresh approach.
James
He despairs at the violence of the armageddon prophecies, but does so by prophesying a violent armageddon.(from AcinonyxScepticus' review of the movie). If I remember correctly, Maher said: "Grow up, or die".
Has anyone else noticed that the general level of tension between Chistians & Muslims is rising? Have a look at this article http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?newslett=1&art_id=nw20090220061422916C552676&click_id=79&set_id=1&em=171138a1a20090220at and specifically
"If this was directed at the Islamic faith, there would be a massive outcry, maybe even with violence. Thankfully we won't respond that way, but that does not make us whipping boys."("we" being Christians).
Or am I just being paranoid about something that could reeeeaally cause the end of the world?
That claim by christians is the canard that “we are gentle good people, that’s why we get persecuted”.
It’s a massive, smelly load…
Smelly load it is, on all sides of the “10-dimensional coin”.
But my point is that we are seeing more and more of this. In general, the “christian mass” only woke up from their doze to take note of the sheer size and belligerence of the “muslim mass” after 9/11 and the subsequent wars in the Middle East.
They had to notice, because muslim groups have become positively vociferous in pointing out the smallest slight to their religion. They are also very clever in pulling the race card at the slightest opportunity.
The escalation in protest and reaction incidents is sufficient to make you wonder whether there is a common strategy behind this increasingly high muslim public/media profile.
In response (in their arrogance, a slow response), chistians are starting to ramp up their public/media profile, albeit clumsy and uncoordinated.
The general belligerence index between these two religions is on the increase.
The deep irony of course is that both religions pretend to preach peace, love, harmony and goodwill among all people. The part they don’t tell you is, “as long as you are peace-loving and goodwilled on our terms, for ours are the only correct ones.”
If only more people stood up and laughed — loudly — at this embarrassing ridiculousness.

This movie should now be available at your video rental shop.

OK I finally saw this movie and its very good. Strangely, what made the biggest impression on me was Father George Coyne ( remeber he was the priest that explained that there is no science in the Bible, because the Bible and science are separated by about 1500 years). Not only thoroughly schooled in science, but a very charismatic individual: polite and totally devoid of ego.
Here is Coyne in brilliant interview with Dawkins (there are seven parts to this on Youtube, so if you haven’t seen it before you can almost make an evening of it!
I split the thread to http://forum.skeptic.za.org/religion-and-philosophy/split-from-religulous/ as it was getting off topic. OHA, there are other threads where you can discuss Expelled - or start a new one.
