Weekly / Monthly Newsletter

Hi Bluegray V,

I know the forum must take up a hell of a lot of your time, but how about a short, regular communication from you, pointing out interesting discussions on the site etc.

What generates quite a bit of traffic to posts is the “latest posts” section on the main page, but then they are replaced. What would be nice is a “hot topics” section.

I know SMF is limiting in some areas, but a section where only moderators post to might work.

Skepticdetective suggested a newsletter before. Perhaps people don’t want to read a long publication; just a short, interesting post with a link straight from the main page.

The main reason for this thought is the work done here that needs some credit, but I fear that it will be buried under other posts a month from now. We are also looking forward to some feedback here.

What do you think?

Kind regards,

Paul

I think that is a good idea. I toyed with adding a hot topics section based on replies/num of posts which is not that difficult with SMF, but that only highlights topics like uhuru and krugel - topics like you mentioned will need some manual intervention. It would be nice to also have that on the main page.

Otherwise, a post with a summary of the week/month’s interesting topics is of course doable. Maybe members can nominate topics in a weekly post or something like that.

Let me think it over a bit. Suggestions are welcome.

BTW how many people visit the main page? It is probably in need of an update

I’ve set my favourites shortcut to directly into the forum. Maybe if it was a bit more informative, people like me won’t do that. It will need a link from the forum as well.

I sometimes go to the main page, but I am on a borrowed machine, so it is not bookmarked. Like Sentinel, when on my own box, I usually go straight in.

I always go to the main page first, it’s easier to find the latests posts.

I’ve changed my favourites to go to the main page first. I hope to see a surprise soon!
