my company has now blocked facebook. waddefok.
the server blocks you, but i have read up, that you can enter the IP address instead, and still access the site.
now i can get as far as the login page, then after that, it gets blocked.
any clever people have a sneaky-sneaky for me?
Our company allows facebook before 8am, after 4pm and between 1pm - 2pm every day. They have’nt caught up onto the forum time though… ;D
Facebook is not allowed at my work either. EVER. I find this very annoying, but I am also glad they haven’t caught on to blocking this site… hehe.
I have logged on using a proxy server before (just google it, there are thousands) but it is usually very slow, and my work has started blocking them one by one. I just FB on my phone… but its not the same. :’(
its a bit of a pain in die gat, cause i have a photography group, and its kinda pointless to access fb from my fone, if i have to upload pics, directions, google maps, create event…
Oooh, tell me more about the photography group.
CaptainKlingon had his own proxy, but I forget the URL now. I’ll ask him to come and reply if he can help.
we are just a bunch of amateurs that bugger off somewhere in and around jhb about once a month, and take pics, talk kak, and try and look like we know wtf we are doing.
the last time we went to kyalami when they had superbike training. we went into the pits and all. it was quite rad.
i havent planned the next one yet, cause of rain, public holidays, looming soccer stuff… but if you have any suggestions, please do tell.
if u wanna join the group on fb. is called : jozi amateur photographers.
btw, superbike champs on weekend of 15may. should be a cracker.
im sure, too, that we would mind gatecrashing a wedding or two.
Yup, I have my own web proxy, but unfortunately that won’t help you with Facebook… I’m in the same position at my current client, but the web proxy I use can’t handle authenticated sessions very well.
I have come up with an adequate workaround though: Hootsuite - www.hootsuite.com
Hootsuite is a web-based Twitter client (like Tweetdeck, but it sits inside your browser). The interesting thing is that it also supports Facebook, LinkedIn, Foursquare and several other social networking sites through their integration APIs.
The Facebook functionality is severely limited: all you can do is post status updates, see your timeline and make comments on items that appear therein. But it’s better than nothing. You’ll also need access to a computer that doesn’t have the Facebook block in place to set up the link between FB and Hootsuite to begin with via Facebook Connect (home, gym or an Internet cafe should do the trick).
Unfortunately it won’t help you with the more complicated stuff like events and photo uploads either. I have to wait till I get home before I do that stuff.
oh snap.!
doesnt matter i guess. will just do it the looooong way with my fone.
sigh.
My employer blocks pretty much everything except secure traffic, the internet banking kind. What I do to get around that is to use https:// instead of the normal http://
The other option is one of the anonymous proxy servers e.g. http://www.the-cloak.com/login.html
The free one allows only one connection (but multiple tabs, I think) per IP address, so don’t tell anyone else in your network, or they’ll block you out.
Edit: use at own risk. Don’t let the anonymous bit fool you, your employer will still see what you’re doing in their log files.
our it guru is suuuuper nosey, so guarinteed any and all sneakiness on my behalf will be noted duly.
bugger.
Or you could just get internet at home through your cell phone. It’s not too expensive.
i do use my cell, but my george, then it wont connect, then it the laptop doesnt recognise the usb device, then it says its online, but the pages dont load. my goeie fok.
You must have Windows on your laptop. Shame. You say you are connected but cannot view any pages. This sounds to me as though no DN servers are detected. If you are on Vodacom you sometimes have to enter these manually or unplug/replug until they are detected.
i am, alas, on windows. i had vista, but threw a wobble, then i made them give me xp isntead. personally, i am a linux girl.
Linux ROCKS. I’ve got Vista on my laptop, which sucks, but Windows 7 on my PC - which is awesome. I got a separate internet dongle-thingy from Vodacom with a separate number/account etc. It’s awesome, very fast and about the best if you don’t have access to a land-line.
3G is cheaper too, provided you don’t use more than about 3GB per month. The whole lot comes to less than the line rental from Telkom.
If you use firefox:
Install TOR: http://www.torproject.org
It re-routes your traffic through a series of random servers on the internet, all of which cannot see where the final payload is going. That includes your employer. It also encrypts the data, so no-one can sneak a peak.
Then Install Torbutton add-on for firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2275
This allows you to click a button in the bottom of your browser to enable secure traffic. It’s slower than internet normally would be, obviously, and your other tabs (like gmail) will become non-usable while the browser is in secure mode. BUT: I’ve found it quite effective in hopping employer firewalls.
You can use this with other browsers too, but the setup and use is a bit more involved.
