Landmarks. Where am I?

Swartberg Pas

It does have a similar look to it i.t.o. sandstone and vegetation. You are only 200km out.

That’s a sugar refinery in Swaziland.

No wait, are those cooling towers real, or just hyperbole?

It’s a coal-fired power station, though I don’t know exactly which one. Probably Mpumalanga somewhere around eMalahleni (Witbank) and Middelburg.

ETA: … which would mean you’re probably on the N4 travelling east or west.

Matla power station close to the town of Kriel. R547 going west. Notice the two smoke stacks are not the same? Bit of a story there. Corners were cut during construction (they did that back in the day as well) and the one had to be demolished. An explosive crew was brought in from America I believe, but they also made a mistake. It was supposed to just crumble in one heap but instead fell over to one side. It came down and took out some very expensive transformers. When it was build again they used the newer design that was used on the Duva and Kendal stations.

I uploaded the picture to Flikr and copied the URL. Paste that into the picture thing here. Why did it not work?

The URL you used is that of a page that displays the picture, not the picture itself. The URL of the picture is https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5234/14230670084_c7fb0385e6.jpg. Notice that the URL identifies a specific image file, in this case a JPEG called “14230670084_c7fb0385e6.jpg”. You can usually (mostly, but not always) get this URL by right-clicking on the image and selecting “Properties” (I’m assuming you’re using M$ Internet Explorer). If the “Type” description on the properties dialogue doesn’t say something about “image”, things get a lot trickier. You’ll probably need to inspect the HTML source of the page to find the image URL you’re after (right-click on the page, select “View source”). Any URL in the source that points to an image file type (most commonly with a “.jpg”, “.png” or “.gif” extension) can be pasted directly into the Explorer’s address and viewed in order to check if it’s the image you want.

I use Google Chrome and no “properties”. “Copy link address” gives me this: My 21st!! 013 | Ernst Marais | Flickr
Will that work or the share one:

No, neither of those will work because again those URLs point to web pages, rather than specific image files. I don’t know Google Chrome well enough to know how to find those URLs. Perhaps one of the other members can help with this.

How I upload pictures

1 Attache file to my comment (scroll down and look for additional options)
2 Post my reply
3 Go to my post and copy the url to the attachement
4 Edit my post
5 Insert Img tag with and past url between the tag.

That way you don’t have to bother with 3rd party image hosting sites.

… as described and shown here.
