Mother Teresa ain't no saint

the writer says:[quote]August 26th, 2010 would have marked the 100th anniversary of the birth of Agnesë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu, the woman known as Mother Teresa and the founder of The Missionaries of Charity. Over four decades ago the media covered the “charitable” work of this nun for the poor of India and since, they’ve never returned to follow up on the actual progress made by the organization she founded.

I worked as a volunteer in one of Mother Teresa’s homes in Calcutta, India for a period of two months at the end of 2008. It was during this time that I was shocked to discover the horrific and negligent manner in which this charity operates and the direct contradiction of the public’s general understanding of their work.

After further investigation and research, I realized that all of the events I had witnessed amounted to nothing more than a systematic human rights violation and a financial scam of monumental and criminal proportions.[quote] (see full article at

In Christopher Hitchen’s book God Is Not Great he mentions how he was called by the Vatican to testify in a hearing to make Mother T into a saint. After he showed them how her “miracles” really happened (e.g. unusual light in film footage was due to new film from Kodak and not due to miraculous intervention) her application for beatification was turned down. Much research into her life and ministry have revealed a dark picture of who she really was (selfish, ambitious, tyrant, much like her Master) but the credulous still regard her as a modern icon of holiness. Very sad.

There was also a Penn and Teller Bullshit episode on her - very informative if not very flattering

She was also, apparently, a bit of a closet skeptic.

In one passage of hers I’ve found, she directly questions the existence of god, jesus, and the soul one foul swoop:

"I call, I cling, I want — and there is no One to answer — no One on Whom I can cling . . . there is nothing, but emptiness & darkness. . . . What do I labour for? If there be no God — there can be no soul — if there is no Soul then Jesus — You also are not true. . . .I utter words of Community prayers — and try my utmost to get out of every word the sweetness it has to give — But my prayer of union is not there any longer — I no longer pray. . . . Jesus: the Absent One ..."

Anyone read Hitchens’ book about her, “The Missionary Position”?
