‘Only God will remove me!’ - Robert Mugabe, 2008

I think this is a perfect example of, as the sub-title of Christopher Hitchens’ book goes, “How Religion Poisons Everything”!

Only God, who appointed me, will remove me — not the MDC, not the British. Only God will remove me!
So basically he will not be removed from power - until he dies, I guess?! When he eventually dies, there will be those delusional people who will say that the imaginary fellow has finally lived up to his word and removed Bob from power!

I have religious friends in Zimbabwe who no-doubt believe in the very same imaginary boogeyman of the sky that is supposedly keeping Bob in power - the mind boggles. If it is the same sky god that spoke to George W. Bush who said -

God told me to strike at al Qaida and I struck them, and then he instructed me to strike at Saddam
If this is the case, Zim doesn't stand a chance.

I think it would be great if presidents were voted into power democratically, making decisions based on advice from real people and not on some revelation from something imaginary while sitting on the loo!

Expect the headline “Not even God can stop me now!” soon.
Mugabe is not even trying to pretend to be sane anymore

I see two possible takes on this whole Mugabe-invokes-god commotion. The first is that Bob is not actually religious but is intoning “god” as a rhetorical device to consolidate support from his fans by means of showing his determination and resolve to retain power. In effect, he’s likening himself to a force that only an all-powerful god can vanquish, the best-known mythological instance of which is Satan, so the parallel is, to say the least, quite interestingly chosen.

The second, and more likely option is that Robert Mugabe and god are no less than character twins: Zimbabwe under Bob’s rule is, though marginally more brutal, a microcosm reflecting the world under any one of several widely popular monotheistic gods.
