The PHOTOGRAPHY thread

You will all be glad to now know that the crater in the above pic is the Gassendi crater on the edge of Mare Humorum. I had help from a group on FB to id it. Gassendi (crater) - Wikipedia and Mare Humorum - Wikipedia

Dankie Rigil, was weg vir 'n paar dae.

At least you can make out the Trap quite clearly.

Sal dit volgende keer probeer as die wolke my 'n kans gee.

I think I can see Crater Zuma…

I can see Wallace & Grommit. Did they go again, or is it just pareidolia?

Enige tips Rigil? Stacking met Registax gedoen.

Only this:

  1. Flip your goalposts over into a horizontal position.
  2. Remove both castor wheels with a socket wrench.
  3. Flip goalposts back into the upright position and anchor securely with tent stakes.

Seriously, I’m not familiar with the workings of Neximage at all. But if I got a shot of Jupiter like the one above, I’d be very pleased!

A flare from a communication satellite rivals Sirius the Dog Star in magnitude.

Another pretty cool photo you may appreciate.

Awesome (and in the original sense of the word, that is to say, not in the way that we tend to describe things like chocolate souffles these days.)

Not photography, exactly. I am utterly ignorant of the topic of astronomy and was very surprised to see how few large telescopes there are across the world. I always ‘knew’ that SALT was important and was pretty impressed when I visited it on an impulse a few years ago. My sense of awe of the project was probably reinforced by the consequences of camping there, in winter, without proper preparation. It turned out to be one of the coldest nights of that year and I had to ‘wear’ all my clothes on my arms and legs to stay warm. However, I have never even considered the bigger picture of how the Sutherland telescopes stacked up against the other biggies. I just found this:

You knew this was coming after the Photobucket issue. Neximage 5 webcam, stacked in Autostackkert 2 and finally processed (a bit too much I think) in Registax.

Yesterday’s image reprocessed. Somewhat less enthusiastic, not so garish. Also, what is SA’s equivalent of Radio Schack? I need to build an “electric focuser” to help with the focus. At the moment, just by touching the focus knob, sets the scope shaking, and that in turn produce a blurred image.

Mantech or RS components or Communica.

Tweefo, I may well be dead wrong on this, but the picture looks missaligned rather than out of focus. Could you perhaps send me/ link to the original video? I’d like to see what Registax does with it.
