Thinking in Numbers: How maths illuminates our lives

A collection of 25 essays that presumably attempts to link numbers and mathematics to subjects as diverse as history and psychology. As interesting but light reading fodder, I found the essays average to good. The author’s account of his impressive world record set by reciting a large chunk of pi, is particularly memorable. I would have liked a bit more, or indeed any, equations and diagrams in the work. The author is clearly very enthusiastic about the role numbers play in real life, but I couldn’t help thinking that the subject matter feels a bit forced, and that the language, though impeccable, fails to convince. I think its probably a good book to borrow from the library, and will rate it 3 abacuses out of five.
