USS Theodore Roosevelt to dock in Cape Town

Environmentalists and anti-war groups are fired up by the visit of a United States warship - the USS Theodore Roosevelt.

The US warship has been granted permission to sail into South African waters, but not every one is thrilled by the expected arrival of the ship in Table Bay over the weekend as it is nuclear powered.

The ship will anchor in Table Bay five kilometers from land, and will be monitored continuously throughout the visit. The ship visits the shores of South Africa at the invitation from the South African Defence Force.

The approval was granted over objections from environmental group Earthlife Africa, which has said it plans protests against the vessel.
I'm looking forward to go see this!

For those of us who are also interested, but landlocked, News24 has a gallery of user submitted photos.

Nothing like seeing the real thing, but we’ll have to make do. :frowning:

Was there today, not much to see when I was there unfortunately. It was quite some way from the coast.
The USS Monterey is docked at the Waterfront and can be visited during the day (and boarded I assume) if anyone is interested.
