Wasp spiders won’t let their sisters eat them after sex

So people who study spider sex…(I wonder how that one goes over at cocktail parties? “So, what do you do?” “Well I study spider sex.” “Oh…um…”).

Anyway, people who study spider sex have found that a particular species is less likely to allow itself to be eaten after sex if it is committing incest (seriously, people study this stuff - Incestuous spider sex article ). Quote: “They [the spider sex scientists] found that males escaped being eaten almost half of the time (47%) if they were mating with their sisters, but just a fifth of the time (22%) if they mated with an unrelated female. This was directly related to the length of their flings – when they had sex with sisters, they left after 5.8 seconds but they kept at it for 9 seconds when it came to unrelated females.”

Surely bizarre and macabre phenomena like this in nature are a great argument against an intelligent designer? I mean what kind of sick and twisted being would intentionally create something like this? Ew.

well, even from an evolutionary point of view, this is shitty, coz if you inbreed, you create all kinds of DNA havock. so i would think, this particular flavour arachnid, is a bit misguided.
nature is filled with weird shit.
and biology itsself is testimony that there is absolute no grand design, apart from mutations, that some work, and become a special adaptation that sends a species off on another evolutionary path. or doesnt work, like bonking your sister, to create cyclops twin.

hell, maybe i have it all wrong, and the point in inbreeding, is to freak out DNA, so that mutations can happen.
hey shit… maybe im on to something…

if god did create the earth, he is playng xbox, and sure as hell not paying attention to his little project.

I should probably have included this bit too: “But why should a male mate with their sister at all, if she’s such an undesirably partner? The scientists suggests that males lead precarious lives anyway, and the longer they spend searching for a mate, the greater their odds of dying before becoming fathers. So high is this risk that they’ll accept even undesirable mating opportunities; they’ll just try to move on to better things without getting eaten first.”

So this strategy makes sense from an evolutionary point of view - better to mate with your sister than not at all - but who would design it that way??!!

No wonder the females eat them after sex! Shit - only 9 seconds? I’m surprised the females don’t burn them at the stake. Imagine some spidey stud going for 10 seconds - maybe the female will let him live.

To be fair to the little guys, spiders only live for a few years, so maybe 9 seconds is a long time in spider seconds. :slight_smile:

Eek, trouble for Peter Parker and Mary-Jane Watson…

…or maybe not. ::slight_smile:

Puts a new slant on the female eating the male spider after sex. I wonder if Mary-Jane swallows?
