Some Fora are now gone for me, or am I blocked?

Unlike the BB Code “url” tags, the “iurl” tags were seemingly ignored and the link text treated as ordinary text. There are several of my old posts with such links that no longer work.

Edit: Is there a way to set one’s display name to something other than one’s username?

@Mefiante, if you can point me to some of those posts please? I can look into fixing them.

Also, I’ve enabled editing of usernames temporarily - if you’d like to change your username. Seems there are only the username and full name options.

I found one: https://forum.skepticza.org/t/general-chat-thread/6154/100?u=boogiemonster

The above post definitely had an “iurl” tag (otherwise the post’s contents don’t make sense), but I can’t remember the URL itself.

Thanks for the heads-up re usernames. I’ll try that right away!

Edit: Yay, it works!

I’m finding exceptions to this:

Images like this are valid but display as links. It also looks like the imgbb links (posts below the one linked) have had their URL’s changed to point to the imgbb page instead of the image (I always linked the image directly).

Not that it really matters, but pointing out many of these links are clickable and one can still find the content…

Thanks @BoogieMonster !

I’m still getting to grips with how image links are handled, and what complicates matters, is that there were many ways to format those links. So some were correctly converted by the migration script, while others got broken due to inconsistent or incorrect formatting. So this might very well have to be handled on a case by case basis. Luckily as you said, most are still clickable, even though they are not displayed as images.

I’m probably not going to fix many of them, but I’ll see if I can at least fix broken code if there is a clear pattern emerging.

I’ve enabled the setting to allow tl2+ users to edit their own post indefinitely for now. So feel free to fix your own posts if you find them

The easiest way would be to simply use the url to the image and let discourse do the rest. That way we are at least consistent with image formats if we need to deal with that again.

Also, it seems that some image urls are not converted to images automatically, because it’s not clear that it’s an image url. For the url you liked above, adding a recognisable image extension works fine, like so:

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EidKthoXkAEAJiR.jpg instead of https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EidKthoXkAEAJiR?format=jpg&name=900x900

The imgbb https://i.ibb.co/hRjZrd7/image.png post however is formatted as a link using [url] bbcode. It can be similarly edited as simply https://i.ibb.co/hRjZrd7/image.png for the image to render in the post directly.

And to clarify, Discourse supports a few ways to format posts:

Markdown is simplest, and you can also mix in some common HTML to format posts.

Some Discourse specific bbcode is also supported, mostly for certain custom functions not supported in normal HTML or Markdown I suppose

And lastly, urls without formatting and on a line of it’s own are also supported with Onebox. This generates previews for web page links, but it works for some image urls that can be identified as images - as discussed in the previous post (still not 100% sure about the specific behavior for image urls, so use Markdown when in doubt).

Like this:

This looks to be bbcode [iurl] links that were incorrectly converted, I’ll have to see if we can recover those. Unfortunately the migrate script stripped the urls for some reason, probably because it expected a different format. Best not to keep using [iurl] - it was meant for internal links in old bbcode forums.

Can’t post in I lol’d because I’m not allowed to post 3 replies in a row… Had to edit the last post…

@BoogieMonster, try now? There is a max consecutive replies limit that is set to 3 by default. I’ve bumped that to 10 now, and made you the topic owner, so you should be immune to that setting in there.

Works fine! Thanks! …

Ok, here I am. Thought Skeptic came to an end.
